Brussels, Belgium — July 1st 2010 – Today, Itron Inc. (NASDAQ:ITRI), announced a groundbreaking pilot with leading Indian utility, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL). Itron will supply an automated meter reading (AMR) solution for residents in New Delhi, including 2,000 residential gas meters with EverBlu Cyble radio modules, as well as handheld computers and associated data collection software. Itron will also provide 500 Pulse RF retrofit units for existing traditional meters.
The initial objective of this pilot is to test and evaluate the commercial and technical feasibility of an advanced meter reading solution for New Delhi’s residents. The benefits and cost savings of Itron’s system will be evaluated against IGL’s existing manual reading system. Its success will build momentum toward the development of a business case for full deployment of a city-wide fixed network AMR system to potentially encompass 175,000 residential AMR-ready meters previously supplied by Itron as well as up to 75,000 new connections that IGL expects over the next five year.
“We’ve established a strong relationship with Itron over the years. We trust Itron’s technology and expertise to conduct the AMR trial and assist us in large scale deployments in the future,” said Mr. Manjit Singh, vice-president for IGL Engineering and Projects.
Commented Praveen Aswani, Itron general manager over gas in India, “Itron is uniquely positioned in India to both supply and support products locally. With an established foothold in large-scale commercial and industrial AMR, our offering now includes residential AMR. We are evolving to both create and collect meter reading data across multiple consumer segments for a typical city.gas distribution company.”
